Eagles’ Darius Slay takes another massive shot at Lions, Matt Patricia

Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay took another shot at his former team on Monday, implying that Detroit Lions coaches treated players poorly.

Former Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay continued to take shots at the organization on Monday, per Zach Berman of The Athletic, stating how grateful he is to be in Philadelphia and explaining that he feels more able to express himself in the locker room where he’s treated like a grown man.

Slay’s comments come months after he ripped Matt Patricia’s coaching style and said that he had no respect for his former coach following an incident between the two in 2018, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Darius Slay is so happy to be away from Matt Patricia and the Lions

It’s definitely safe to say that the former All-Pro corner is glad to be out of Detroit. While he has had three consecutive Pro Bowl seasons with the Lions, Slay was outspoken about his desire to leave Detroit in recent years, and his poor relationship with Patricia seemed to be the biggest factor.

The Eagles handed Slay a three-year extension after trading for him, and the Lions promptly drafted his replacement by selecting Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah with the third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, so both teams seem to be at peace with the trade.

However, Slay has not been afraid to offer some parting shots toward Patricia, and the organization’s higher-ups may be forced to listen to comments like Slay’s if the coach struggles to deliver in his third season with the Lions.

Patricia sports a 9-22-1 record as Detroit’s head coach and was on the hot seat after 2019. Without the on-field success to back up his seemingly harsh coaching style, general manager Bob Quinn may be forced to find a new head coach to look out for his own job.

Lions ownership has placed high expectations on both, and Quinn’s job could be linked to Patricia’s if the team flounders again in 2020. With a lockdown corner like Slay now out of the fold, that possibility looks increasingly likely.
